Information about Barley

Barley is a cereal grain with a nut like flavor and it is a bit chewy. Its appearance resembles wheat, although it is slightly lighter in color. Barley is considered a whole grain and has bran and germ nutrients in them and can be processed into a variety of products, including flour, and flakes similar to oatmeal. Barley contains all eight essential amino acids, tons of fiber, iron and several minerals. It can help lower cholesterol, and with all that fiber is a very useful grain that can help your intestines. I think its a grain that has been pushed out of popularity. I hope by describing its goodness you will find it a great addition to your meals as I have. Here are the different types to choose from.

Hulled barley is the most nutritious since it has only the outer covering removed. It takes longer to cook but has the most nutritional punch.

Pearl barley is hulled barley which has been processed further to remove the bran. and takes about 1 hour to cook. This is the type that is most widely used, particularly in soups and stews.

Quick barley tastes very much like pearl barley however it can be cooked in 10 minutes and it can be used as a side dish.

Rolled barley looks like rolled oats and takes 30 minutes to cook. This is commonly used as a hot cereal.
